Officer Jennifer Sebena

April 3, 2013
Thank you to one and all.  Your voices were heard!

The decision to include the name of Officer Jennifer Sebena on the roll of honour on the National Law Enforcement Officer Memorial in May of this year has been positive and unanimous.  The board of Directors of the NLEOMF listened to the law enforcment community and citizens of Wisconsin.

"Gov. Scott Walker, the Wisconsin Professional Police Association and more than 16,000 signatures on an online petition helped persuade the group to reverse its decision in a unanimous vote Wednesday, said WPPA spokesman Jim Palmer, who cast one of the 15 votes."

Jennifer, rest in peace.

Officer Jennifer Sebena
Wauwatosa, Wisconsin
End of Watch – December 24, 2012

On Thursday, March 21, 2013, the Board of Directors of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, NLEOMF, decided to delay a decision to include Wauwatosa, Wisconsin Officer Jennifer Sebena’s name on their roll of honour until 2014.

Officer Sebena was killed while on duty on December 24, 2012. The Board of Directors of NLEOMF have deferred the decision to include her on their roll of honour while they “continue to examine and investigate” the circumstances of her death.

I urge the Board of Directors of NLEOMF to focus on Officer Sebena and her actions as an honorable member of the law enforcement community, and not on who or the reason why he killed her.  She was tragically killed while serving and protecting the citizens of Wauwatosa. May the final decision that is reached by NLEMOF be to place her name on their roll of honour at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.

I urge my colleagues to research the facts surrounding Officer Jennifer Sebena's death and make your voices heard regarding the decision not to include her name on the Memorial in 2013.

Congratulations Superintendent Deborah Friedl!

Lowell Police Department shoulder patch

MAWLE extends congratulations and our best wishes to Deborah Friedl as she takes over the Superintendent postion of the Lowell Police Department.  This is an historic occasion as she is the first female to lead the organization.  Though for anyone who knows Debbie, it is an expected step in her career.  How fitting that her appointment to this position takes place in March - Women's History Month!

Debbie Friedl has served the Lowell Police Department for over 26 years, most recently in the position of Deputy Superintendent.  She is the Executive Director of the International Association of Women Police and has been a MAWLE member since it's beginning days.

As she takes the top job at the Lowell Police Department at the end of this month, may all our best wishes and support go with her.

Congratulations Debbie!

Join the Discussion!

A new section will soon be added to the website titled "Join the Discussion".  This section will allow for dialogue among MAWLE members, enabling them to voice their opinion, exchange information or ask for advice on subjects that relate to their work in the law enforcement field on-line.

Until that section is up and running, we will post the question/subject here and will post your comments that you send to us at contact@mawle.org.

Our first subject for your consideration:

Pregnancy/Maternity Best Practices and Policies -

In the past MAWLE has been a part of conversations that resulted in positive changes for women in law enforcement.  For example, MAWLE took part in the conversation on PAT academy testing which resulted in them being standardized and fair to females as well as males in Massachusetts.

MAWLE is currently conducting research on pregnancy/maternity practices and policies.  Although FLMA covers a 12 week period, it appears that issues surrounding non-confrontational positions are arising during the mid to third trimester time frame of the offices who are working and are pregnant.  MAWLE would like feedback, both positive and negative, from officers who have experienced a pregnancy while working and interested in how the departments handled this.  It is MAWLE's hope to once again be instrumental in positive changes that effect women in law enforcement who wish to also be mothers.

Please send your comments and any documents/policies that you want to share on this subject to: contact@mawle.org
