History of MAWLE

How MAWLE first started

MAWLE ConferenceA small group of friends from the Massachusetts State police got together informally and started working on an idea to organize a professional women's police association in October 2003 and February 2004.

Simultaneously, an organization called Women In Blue, was also meeting. Women in Blue was forged through the networking of Boston and Brookline Police officers. Both these organizations, shared many of the same objectives. After collaboration, the Massachusetts Association of Women in Law Enforcement (MAWLE) was born. MAWLE's mission, first and foremost, was to keep women in the field of law enforcement informed and connected and second, to stay focused on the positive aspects of women in law enforcement.

MAWLE ConferenceWhat we learned

Since the beginning, key MAWLE members who have been responsible for strengthening the framework of our organization are represented by numerous departments including Boston Police, Brookline Police, Concord Police, Essex County Sheriffs Department, Harvard University Police, Massachusetts State Police, Peabody Police, and the Plymouth County Sheriffs Department.

What kind of organization will we be?

MAWLE recognized early in our organizational development that numerous agencies, other than police departments, employ potential members who are affiliated with the discipline of Law Enforcement. These women contribute significantly to their respective agencies and often share similar experiences that women in police departments face. MAWLE ConferenceMAWLE also recognized the importance of many non-sworn members and their vital expertise and opinions, resulting in their ability to contribute significantly to our mission. Today, MAWLE is a vibrant and diverse organization that is represented by women from ALL law enforcement organizations, including local police departments, campus police, corrections, the judicial systems, and any agencies in the field in Law Enforcement.

MAWLE is not a collective bargaining group. Simply stated, we don't aspire to be a labor union. We do hope to collaborate with the various unions and network with them to keep abreast of issues that affect our members.

MAWLE is committed, as an organization, to make positive changes in the law enforcement community within the state of Massachusetts.
